KMOX, St. Louis Recounts Last Weekend’s Tornado

When an EF-3 tornado swept through the St. Louis area last weekend, Audacy’s news/talk KMOX was able to stay on the air and provide critical community service. Recounting how events unfolded last weekend, the station says engineer Kyle Hammer was monitoring the approaching system when he noticed a transmitter site in the storm’s path lost commercial power, automatically switching toimg generator backup. About 35 minutes later the tornado moved through the city. It took Hammer about 90 minutes to go three miles through downed tress and power lines to get to the FM transmitter site and get it back on the air. Audacy SVP and market manager Becky Domyan says, “I want to give a huge shout-out to the entire team at KMOX for outstanding, minute-by-minute coverage on the storms. I can’t reiterate how much this information was life-saving, and big kudos to news brand manager Beth Coghlan for leading her team through this calmly and accurately.” Domyan adds, “I actually was driving on Mason Road near Lindbergh when it hit, and I have driven through storms many times. For the first time in my life, in this situation, I was terrified. At that moment, I tuned into KMOX to get an idea of where the storm was, so I knew what I needed to do to be safe. In times like this, we are there to provide information that truly saves lives. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone on our team.”

Jon Grayson to Retire from KMBZ-FM, Kansas City

Talk radio pro Jon Grayson is retiring from the business and his current position as midday co-host at Audacy’s news/talk KBMZ-FM, Kansas City. Grayson has been with KMBZ-FM for the past five years, most recently co-hosting middays with Jayne Monacelli. Grayson says, “My wife and I are makingimg some changes in our lifestyle, our geography and our living standards to protect our safety and sanity that include an international move. That simply makes this job no longer feasible.” Reflecting on his career, Grayson remembers getting into the business. “As a kid I was always steered away from potential careers that depended on personal talent alone, since my mom was convinced that people who made their living that way were somehow possessed of a magic that us regular folks don’t have. But the day I first heard talk radio – a day I remember very clearly – I fell in love. I had no choice in the matter. From calling in to talk shows as a college student to beating down the doors of my local station to hire me, this business always held a kind of allure I found irresistible.” During his career, he worked in Tampa, Nashville, and St. Louis, where he worked at KTRS and KMOX. At KMOX he hosted the syndicated “Overnight America” program.

KFNS, St. Louis to Change Hands and Sports Talk Format

Changes are afoot at KFNS-AM, St. Louis. “FOX 2” St Louis is reporting that Zobrist Media has found a buyer for the station licensed to Wood River, Illinois that’s been airing sports talk for much of the past three decades. Big Toe Media has reportedly agreed to acquire the station and will assume control over itsimg operations via a local management agreement, though a format change it in the works. Big Toe Media’s president and director of sales Dave Greene tells FOX 2, “I was attempting to sell it on Dave Zobrist’s behalf and got very close with one person and had several others interested. When the strong lead didn’t work out, we were able to work out a very favorable deal for both sides.” Regarding the format, Geene says, “The idea of one singular topic for content is outdated. We will talk about what St. Louis talks about, which includes plenty of sports but also local news, culture, food, business, events and more.” FOX 2 notes that Greene is “closely involved with the leadership team” of Sports Hub STL, a digital sports network producing content from local personalities, most of whom have worked in St. Louis sports radio at some point over the years. Ratings Takeaways

April 2024 MLB Flagship Scoreboard

imGenerally speaking, Major League Baseball radio flagships enjoyed a solid first at bat in Nielsen Audio’s 2024 rating season (March 28 – April 24).

To put things in perspective, the baseball year officially started March 20 when the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres played two games in South Korea; the other 28 teams played their first game March 28.

Listed below are each MLB team’s main flagship.

Only one station per team appears – there are no simulcast partners and/or internet streams.

In addition, flagships of the Yankees and Mets are listed only in New York (not Long Island and Middlesex), while key stations of the Giants and A’s appear in San Francisco (not San Jose).

There was a (6+) March 2024 – April 2024 uptick in approximately four of every five applicable flagship cases (81%); 15% dipped; and 4% were flat.

Representative March 2024 – April 2024 (6+) gains were +0.92, while typical declines were -0.27.

Heftiest increases (+2.0 each) were logged by news/talk WLW, Cincinnati (Reds) and news/talk WTAM, Cleveland (Guardians).

Flagships of the Angels (KESN); White Sox (WMVP); and Brewers (WTMJ) did not appear (DNA) in the March 2024 or April 2024 survey periods.
